Waymo just announced that its self-driving cars are heading to three more American cities - San Diego, Las Vegas, and Detroit - and honestly, it's about time we start letting the robots take the wheel. Humans have had decades to prove we can handle driving, and the evidence says otherwise: we can't.
The rollout is planned for 2026, which means that very soon, you will be sharing the road with a car that has no driver and, as a bonus, no road rage either. Waymo, the Google-owned company, already operates in cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Atlanta, and Austin. Their sleek electric Jaguar I-Paces can be hailed through an app - like Uber, but with zero small talk and no one judging your Spotify playlist.
They've been testing in Detroit's snowy conditions too, which means these cars are learning to handle black ice better than half of us ever will. Sure, there have been a few bumps (literally), but statistically, Waymo's AI drivers are already proving safer and more consistent than human ones.
So yeah, I'm all for it. Let's fill the roads with robot cars. They don't text, don't tailgate, and don't eat a burrito while merging onto the highway. Humanity's had a solid run behind the wheel - maybe it's time we sat in the back and let the machines drive us home.
